Spanish Village Art Center: Yesterday and Today

Spanish Village Art Center remains as a historic landmark despite of all changes. The construction of this charming Spanish style village can be dated back to 1935, when it was built in Balboa Park for the second California Pacific International Exposition. And it remained as a popular attraction afterwards. Two years later, the village was turned into an art center by some local artists. That's the very time when arts started to sprout in this village.

During the second World War, the village was used as barracks by the army. Dedicated artists restored this historic landmark and strived to make it a better place for arts. Today it has become a favorite for San Diego artists and photographers alike. And this charming village has grown into a thriving community with 37 working artist studios/galleries and more than 250 local artists.

Spanish Village Art Center houses a galaxy of talents. Some of the region's best sculptors, painters, photographers, printmakers, mixed-media artists, jewelry designers, clay artists, gourd artists, fiber artists, glass artists, and other genius all call it home. Those studios and galleries are free to visit from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm everyday. Some people even make this place the backdrop for their wedding and banquet.

Time is ever changing. Yet the Spanish Village in Balboa Park remains in the name of arts. To know more about the yesterday and today of Spanish Village Art Center, please visit:
