San Diego History

In 1602, San Diego was given its long-standing name by a Spanish explorer named Sebastian Vizcaino. Since then, more than four-hundred years later, the city, located in southern-California, has generated a rich and interesting history.

As with California, early San Diego history is closely linked with seaward Europeans stumbling upon the natural treasures of the unexplored Americas. Named and occupied by Spaniards throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, San Diego began as an extension of Mexico.

Once Mexico was granted its independence by Spain, San Diego temporarily became the capital of the new country. This title lasted for only a brief period of time, however, as San Diego, along with California as a whole, soon became a member of the United States of America.

It wasn't until 1886 that San Diego would be recognized as an individual city again. During this time, gold fever had swept the nation and became intertwined with San Diego history. The city also became a brief haven to the Navy during this period.
