One of the major attractions in San Diego is the San Diego Zoo. Located in the Balboa Park, it is considered to be one of the well-maintained zoos in the world, having the largest open-air exhibits in the world. There are over 4000 exotic and wild and domestic animals in the zoo from all over the world.

The zoo features a huge open space for reptile and amphibian, an aquarium and a bird sanctuary. There is also an arboretum that features some of the exotic collection of plants. The excellent climatic condition of San Diego has made it very favorable for plants and animals to thrive in this area.

On your visit to the zoo, you will come across a monkey trail that showcases different kinds of apes and other animals belonging to the African and Asian rainforests. These include snout-crocodiles, pancake tortoise, pigmy hippos and so on. Apart from this there is a huge center that has features giant pandas.

In fact the zoo has been listed among the top five zoos in the country to have giant panda displays. You will also come across a rare collection of Artic polar bears and an extensive collection of animals and birds from the Congo Basin including the Congo Peafowl, swamp monkeys, spotted otters and hippopotamus.

The San Diego zoo is also a botanical garden featuring over 6500 species of plant. Some of these include different varieties of banana trees, yellow trumpet plants and bamboos. You will come across a garden where plants are put on sale. The zoo authorities host interesting programs and packages for children and adults. It is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm.
