History of Mission San Diego de Alcala California

The Church is one of the first Californian Missions and thus this place marks the birth of Christianity in West America. This happens to be California's first church! The Church forms a distinct connection to the Spanish Catholic Church. Today it is an active parish church and a symbol of inspiration for Catholics in the city.

1. Who was Father Junipero Serra?

Father Serra was a native Majorcan who led the Spanish expedition. This was the last of the land expeditions from Mexico. Father Serra established Mission San Diego and the California mission system was started by him.

2. Why was the year 1821 important?

In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain and the Mexican government did not support the building mission. The Decree of Secularization in 1834 removed the administration of the mission from the Franciscans under Father Serra and gave it to Santiago Arguello.

3. How was the mission finally built?

After the United States gained this area from Mexico, two companies of the artillery occupied the mission. For the next several years, various companies of artillery and cavalry occupied the mission. They made some repairs and added a second floor to the church. However soon the mission was abandoned for several years. In 1931, the mission was rebuilt. It is now an active parish and visited by many devotees and those interested in its history.
