The museum was established in 1948. The pride of the collection is the Star of India, one of the earliest wrought-iron ships. Star of India was built in 1863 on the Isle of Man. The museum of San Diego also maintains The Berkeley, B-39 Submarine, The Californian, H. M. S. Surprise, Medea, and The Pilot in its rich collection of sea vessels.
The San Diego Maritime museum organizes lots of various activities for adding the fun elements in tourist's trip, which includes play area in Star India, where young children can get dressed up in costumes & play sailing games. There are various other informative and exciting activities which can be enjoyed every day of the year from 9:00 am to 8: pm.
The museum preserves Mac Mullen Library & Research Archives on board the ferryboat The Berkeley. Apart from getting knowledge about these ships you can go for half an hour expedition on the ship "The Pilot".
